The Yellow Blob

The classic yellow slime mold. Fast, hungry, and smarter than it looks. The perfect starter species for anyone wanting to adopt their first liquid pet.

The Yellow Blob
Scientific Name Physarum polycephalum
Difficulty beginner
Personality Profile Energetic and social. This blob is the golden retriever of the slime mold world. It grows fast, loves companionship (fusing with others), and is always searching for the next oat.
Fun Fact "It can teach its friends. If an educated blob fuses with a new blob, the new one 'learns' everything the first one knew instantly."

Meet the legend.

If you’ve seen a video of a slime mold solving a maze or designing a map of the Tokyo subway system, you were almost certainly looking at Physarum polycephalum.

This is the rockstar of the blob world. It’s easy to keep, hard to kill, and visually stunning.

Why he’s the best starter blob

Physarum is incredibly “human-tolerant.” It doesn’t mind if you peek at it under a desk lamp, and it’s not picky about its diet. While it loves high-quality rolled oats, it will happily exploreagar, wood, or even damp paper towels if it thinks there is a snack at the end.

Biological Superpowers

  • 720 Mating Types: Forget binary genders. The blob has 720 different genetic sequences that determine compatibility. This makes reproduction almost guaranteed when two different blobs meet.
  • Regenerative Healing: If you accidentally clip a piece of your blob, don’t worry. It will heal and seal its single giant cell in roughly two minutes.
  • Non-Neural Intelligence: It has no brain, yet it shares knowledge. A blob trained to ignore salt can fuse with a naive blob and “teach” it that salt is harmless in seconds.

The “Computador Biológico”

Because of its ability to calculate the shortest path between food sources with incredible efficiency, some scientists refer to the Physarum as a biological computer. It doesn’t use electricity; it uses the physics of liquid flow to find the most logical route.

Daily Care Checklist

  • Morning: Check for “searching” pulse. Did he finish his oats?
  • Evening: Add a drop of water if the paper/agar looks dry.
  • Weekend: Clean out any moldy oats (the bad kind of mold) to keep his habitat fresh.

Common Questions

How fast does it grow?
Under ideal conditions (warm, moist, and plenty of oats), a healthy Physarum can double in size every 24 hours.
Why is it yellow?
The bright yellow color comes from pigment granules in the protoplasm. It's a signal that 'I am healthy and active!'
Can it really live at a zoo?
Yes! Since 2019, the Parc Zoologique de Paris has exhibited Physarum polycephalum as a major attraction, showcasing its ability to solve mazes and learn.
