Obtain Your Pet Slime Mould

Start with the community. Buy only if you need to.

Getting your first slime mould is often easier than you think. Once someone has a healthy culture, it can often be shared as a small dried piece called sclerotia (a resting, dry form that can wake up again). Ask other slime mould people, teachers, local biology clubs, makerspaces, or online groups before you buy.

Buying is a good backup when nobody nearby can share. It should not be your first move. Slime mould culture feels better when it starts with sharing.

Most beginners should start with dried sclerotia. They are easier to post, store, and wake up than an active culture.

Beginner decision

  1. 1 Ask nearby people for spare sclerotia.
  2. 2 Offer postage. Keep the request short and local.
  3. 3 Buy only if the community route goes quiet.

Option 1

Free Slime Mould

Your first try should be the free route. Slime mould is easy to share once someone has a healthy culture, and many hobbyists like helping a beginner start. Ask politely, say where you are based, and offer to cover postage if someone can send a small dried sample.

Please don't pressure anyone to send cultures. Sharing is a gift, not an obligation.

Who can you ask?

  • Slime mould Facebook groups
  • Friends who like biology, microscopy, fungi, plants, insects, terrariums, or weird living things
  • Teachers and science educators
  • Local schools, universities, and biology departments
  • Makerspaces and community labs
  • Nature clubs and microscopy clubs
  • People in the Slime Mold Club community

The best request is short, polite, and local. Mention your city and country so nearby people can help.

Places to ask first

These are good starting points for finding people who already grow or appreciate slime moulds. Group sizes and activity change over time. Verify live member counts before treating any number as fixed.

Slime Mold Identification & Appreciation

Size and activity note

Large Facebook group. Public search snippets have shown about 7.5K members, but the live count needs manual verification before it becomes a fixed number.

Best for

Identification help, beginner questions, hobbyists, and finding people already growing slime moulds.

How to ask

Start here if you use Facebook. Introduce yourself, mention your country and city, and ask whether anyone nearby can share sclerotia.

Ask the community

Not sure what to write? Copy this and adapt it.

Hi! I'm new to slime moulds and looking for my first culture. I'm based in [city, country]. Before buying, I wanted to ask whether anyone nearby has spare sclerotia they would be willing to share. I'm happy to cover postage if needed. I'm especially interested in beginner-friendly Physarum polycephalum, but I'd be grateful for any advice. Thank you!
  • Say where you are based
  • Ask for dried sclerotia, not a large active culture
  • Offer to cover postage
  • Be patient and kind
  • Share your results later if someone helps you

Option 2

Buy Slime Mould

If you can't find someone nearby to share slime mould with you, buying from a reviewed seller is a good backup. Look for recent reviews, clear product photos, good instructions, responsive communication, and realistic shipping times.

For a first slime mould, dried sclerotia are usually the easiest option. They travel better than active cultures and can often be stored dry until you are ready to wake them up.

Living or dormant cultures may be affected by heat, cold, shipping delays, or import restrictions. Check whether the seller ships to your country and whether biological cultures are allowed to enter.

Before You Buy

A good slime mould seller should make it clear what you are getting, how it will be shipped, and how to wake it up when it arrives.

  • Recent reviews
  • Clear product photos
  • Whether the culture is live, dried, or sclerotia
  • Whether it is Physarum, Badhamia, or another slime mould
  • Shipping from and shipping to your country
  • Estimated delivery time
  • Weather risk: heat, freezing, delays
  • Care instructions included
  • Seller responsiveness
  • Returns or replacements if the culture does not wake up
  • Import restrictions for biological material in your country

What are sclerotia?

Sclerotia are a dried, resting form of slime mould. They are usually the easiest way to send slime mould by post. When placed in the right conditions with a little food, the slime mould can wake up and start growing again.

Shipping and care notes

Slime moulds are living organisms, even when they are dormant. Heat, freezing temperatures, long delays, or rough handling can affect them. If your package is travelling during extreme weather, wait for a better season or choose a seller closer to you.

  • Choose a seller close to your country when possible
  • Avoid ordering during heatwaves or freezing weather
  • Read the care instructions before opening the package
  • Start with a small culture
  • Do not release purchased slime mould outdoors
  • Keep cultures contained and dispose of them responsibly
  • Check local import rules before ordering from another country
